Ideally suited to Years 10 or 11 (but can be adapted for other year groups)
Session transmission length: 50/60 minutes

Box Clever is delighted to be able to provide schools with the opportunity to have the company in the classroom without compromising the rules of social distancing or raising concerns regarding infection transmission. Live drama, interaction and discussion with the company’s actors and creatives will be available in three areas of the curriculum: English, Drama and PSHE and the session will also be recorded for sole use by the school.

English – exploration of key scenes

Shakespeare: Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet. Dickens: A Christmas Carol. J B Priestley: An Inspector Calls

Our actors will rehearse a scene, selected by your school from the chosen play, in the presence of the director during which students will be encouraged to offer comment/advice. Once the scene has been directed and rehearsed it will be performed, after which the students will be invited to question the actors and director.

GCSE Poetry – AQA Anthology. A live performance of a poem selected by your school from the Anthology, after which our actor will explain what attracts them to the poem before encouraging your students to share their own engagement with the text through its words, sounds and imagery. A second performance will reflect the key points and thoughts resulting from this discussion, after which our actor may have time to take questions from the students.

Drama – exploration of professional roles

There will be five sessions on offer in this subject, each presented by a member of our creative team who will provide a description of their own career path from Year 10 to the present day, engage in a Q&A with the students, and offer advice and guidance for those who are interested in pursuing that profession.

The actor: an opportunity to find out how to choose a monologue, prepare an audition speech, learn lines and try out the role of an assessor.
The director: a chance to ask one of our Associate Directors, Iqbal Khan or Kimberley Sykes, about their role in casting and directing a performance.
The designer: company designers, Sorcha Corcoran and Rhys Jarman, will investigate approaches to set design, working to time and to budget.
The stage manager: Pip Thurlow, our Production Manager, willshow exactly how a stage manager ensures that everything is in place for the first public performance by scheduling rehearsals, managing the creative team and overseeing expenditure.
The writer: Michael Wicherek, the company’s Artistic Director and Writer in Residence, will explore the role of the writer from writing to different media to writing to commission.

PSHE – helping you support your students

A choice of scenes from two performances presented by two actors and a director interspersed with facilitated discussions which will allow your students to interact and ask questions.

Mental health and well-being: short scenes from Box Clever’s play The Edge will focus on the importance of friendship, how to identify signs of unwellness, stigma and getting help. The session ends with tips on how to keep both physically and mentally well.
Bullying and hate crime: excerpts from the company’s The Hate Play and facilitated discussions will focus on the causes and manifestations of hate-inspired bullying and the importance of the peer group in the prevention and resolution of issues.
